Oudtshoorn is a town in the Klein Karoo area of South Africa’s Western Cape. It’s known for its ostrich farms and rests along the Route 62 wine route. The central C.P. Nel Museum traces the ostrich-feather boom era and houses a working synagogue. The nearby Cango Wildlife Ranch is a conservation park offering animal petting. To the north, the Cango Caves are a 20-million-year-old network of limestone chambers.

EXPLORE THE CANGO CAVES
Just outside Oudshoorn in the Karoo, the Cango Caves are a series of dripstone caverns that open into vast halls of towering stalagmite formations with names like ‘the bridal couple’, ‘glass flower fantasy’, ‘weird cango candle’ and ‘the hanging shawl’.
Not all of the caves are open to the public – there is more than one section to the caves that took millions of years to form one of the world’s great natural wonders – but the main sections are available for amazing exploratory subterranean walks that include fumbling around on all fours in an effort to see all that is viewable.
CANGO OSTRICH SHOW FARM
Visit the Cango Ostrich Show Farm situated just 14 km from the centre of Oudtshoorn where you can observe and learn all about Ostriches.
At the Cango Ostrich Show Farm you can observe large flocks of Ostriches at different stages of development. There are petting areas where you can cuddle the chicks or feed an ostrich by hand.
CP NEL MUSEUM
Most of the overnight accommodation in Oudtshoorn honours the ostrich industry in one way or another because it is such an integral part of the Karoo. The restaurants, hotels, shops, street vendors and tourist attractions are infused with it in the form of colourful feathers, gorgeous leather and delicious meat products.
The CP Nel Museum celebrates the role of the ostrich trade in the rich history and heritage of Oudtshoorn, and is intriguing to visit. There are a number of exhibitions here. The Le Roux Town House is a unique house that dates back to 1909, built during the feather boom. It stands out for its use of Art Nouveau stained glass in the windows and for its architecture, which has managed to combine elements of luxury, fun and complexity. It has been a National Monument since 1980.
